An Acupuncturist’s Perspective on Treating Menopause Naturally

From time to time, I have clients make appointments for their spouse because they believe their partner can really benefit from my services. In most cases, it’s a wife setting a booking up for her husband. It’s rarely the other way around – until this past month. A husband got in touch and asked if I could see his wife who is going through menopause. He was wondering if acupuncture could help with symptoms like hot flashes and mood changes. The answer is it can.

In case you’re unfamiliar with menopausal symptoms, hot flashes are sudden sensations of heat that surge through the chest, neck and other parts of the body. The face can turn bright red and may be followed by profuse sweating. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling and can be lead to irritability.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, hot flashes are the result of unleashed heat energy going wild in the body. Through acupuncture and Chinese medicine, we can re-anchor this heat and let them serve its proper warming function.

A recent study published in BMJ Open suggests acupuncture can be an effective solution as well. The Danish study discovered that women with menopausal symptoms experienced reduced hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems and emotional issues after doing just five weeks of acupuncture.

Being a natural, drug-free remedy, acupuncture is a great option for treating hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms like mood changes, weight gain, irregular periods and reduced libido. It’s common for patients to experience relief only after a few acupuncture treatments. Regular acupuncture treatments are highly recommended though to ensure symptoms don’t come back.
