Seven Treatments You Didn’t Know Were Covered by Extended Health Benefits

The end of the year is almost here, which means time is running out to use your extended health benefits before they reset. Not sure what to put them towards? Here are seven treatments you may not have known were covered under many extended health plans.

1) Mat Pilates

Best for treating:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Osteoporosis
  • Post-natal issues
  • Postural pain syndromes

Mat Pilates is a body conditioning exercise program that supports rehabilitation and injury prevention by developing core strength, muscle balance and proper postural alignment. It involves traditional Pilates equipment such as resistance bands, weights, foam rollers and fitness balls.

Our mat Pilates sessions are taught on a one-on-one basis so your Pilates-trained physiotherapist can provide instant feedback and modify exercises based on your health condition.

This treatment is offered by Uma Acharekar.

2) Facial Acupuncture

Best for treating:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne and eczema
  • Puffiness under the eyes
  • Skin dryness
  • Sagging jowls

Facial acupuncture, also known as cosmetic acupuncture, is a safe and effective treatment that can erase the signs of time. It enhances blood and lymph flow and improves skin elasticity which results in a brighter, more radiant face. Many patients choose it over other options like Botox and fillers because it’s far less costly, requires no recovery downtime and produces little to no side effects. Facial acupuncture won’t produce as dramatic results as a facelift or change the shape of your facial features, but it can help you look younger.

This treatment is offered by Masako Doi and Jayden Kim.

3) Shiatsu Massage

Best for treating:

  • Back, neck and joint pain
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Insomnia
  • Digestive disorders like constipation
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Menstrual cramps and PMS
  • Fatigue and weakness

Shiatsu originates from Japan and translates to finger pressure. Shiatsu therapists use their fingers and palm to apply soothing pressure to various points on the body. This pressure jumpstarts the body’s natural healing abilities by improving blood flow and stimulating the nervous and immune systems.

You can stay clothed during a shiatsu session as the massage can be performed through a t-shirt and exercise pants. Oils and lotions are not used.

This treatment is offered by Sandy Woodburn.

4) Dry Needling

Best for treating:

  • Muscle tension and pain

Dry needling provides instant pain relief and is performed by a certified physiotherapist. It uses a thin needle to release trigger points. Trigger points are painful muscle knots caused by sports injuries, poor posture, lack of movement and psychological conditions like anxiety or depression. If left untreated, trigger points can develop into more serious issues such as chronic pain and mobility restrictions.

This treatment is offered by Urvi Panchal.

5) Cupping

Best for treating:

  • Stiff muscles
  • Back and neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Rheumatic conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia
  • Acne and eczema
  • Anxiety and depression

Cupping is when small glasses or plastic cups are placed on the skin and used as suction devices. The suction pulls the skin and superficial muscles slightly into the cup to relax muscles and increase blood and lymphatic flow. The process also helps speeds up the healing process and facilitates the removal of toxins.

This treatment is offered by Masako Doi and Gary Chan.

6) Energy Healing

Best for treating:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Chronic pain
  • Muscle tension

Energy healing, also known as reiki, is the transfer of universal energy from a practitioner to a patient. This alternative therapy from Japan is said to remove energy blockages in the body which can alleviate pain, speed up recovery and reduce symptoms of illnesses.

During an energy healing session, patients stay fully clothed while sitting or lying down. The practitioner will transfer energy by making different shapes with their hands and placing them on or over specific areas of the body. Each hand position can be held for two to five minutes before the practitioner moves on to another body part. If there is an injury, the hands may be focused on just the wound for almost the entire session.

Energy healing is covered under extended health benefits when performed in conjunction with acupuncture.

This treatment is offered by Gary Chan.

7) Custom Exercise Programs

Best for treating:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Whiplash
  • Work and sports-related injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Restricted mobility

Chiropractors do more than just adjustments. They create custom exercise programs too. These personalized programs help injured areas regain full function and support injury prevention by strengthening the spine and stabilizing soft tissues and muscles. The exercises can be done anytime, anywhere which gives you the power to take control of your own health.

This service is offered by Morgan Rees.
